History 15 june 2000:
Reports on the state of the Sudurhavid when she sank suggest the vessel was quite unsuitable for the waters in which she was working, at the time of the accident.
Apparently the starboard hatch was uncovered sank within 15 minutes of taking three large waves in succession. The vessels emergency pump apparently failed.
21 august 98: The South African Minister for Transport was to be asked to convene a Court of Marine Inquiry into the sinking after a preliminary inquiry by the South African Marine Safety Authority (SAMSA).
Several South Africans were among those who died.
20 july 98: A Falkland Islands coroner, Keith Watson, delivered an open verdict on the sinking of the vessel, after conducting an inquest into the deaths of the six crew members whose bodies had been recovered.
Evidence to the inquest suggested severe shortcomings in the vessels safety procedures.
24 june 1998: The SouthAfrican Sudurhavid belongs to Aluship Pty. Ltd., owned by Mr.Adrian Kuttel.
6 june 98: Swamped and sunk by a giant wave 306km west of the South Georgia archipelago.
Of the crew of 38, 21 were rescued and 17 died.
28 august 97: Sighted lighting buoys and fishing illegally at night by observer on the fishing vessel Kerguelen de Tremarec in French territory around the Crozet Islands (Gautier & Duhamel 1997).
